Cost of Living in the Algarve

Budget 1,500 to 2,200 euros a month for a single person and 2,200 to 3,200 for a couple — and note that both figures include a car, because in the Algarve that is not optional. It is the line item that makes the region more expensive than its rents suggest.

Rent

Long letMonthly, 2026
T1 — eastern and inland: Olhao, Tavira, Sao Bras, inland Portimao650–900 euros
T1 — Faro, Portimao, Albufeira hinterland800–1,100
T1 — Lagos, Loule, Almancil coast1,000–1,400
T2 — depending on town and season900–1,600

By town, asking rents in June 2026 ran: Loule 18.1 euros per square meter, Lagos 16.8, Albufeira 16.1, Faro 15.2, Portimao 14.5, Tavira 13.2, Olhao 13.1. INE’s median on signed new contracts across the region was 10.71 — the gap between asking and signed is wider here than anywhere else in Portugal, for the reasons on the housing page.

The car — the line nobody budgets for

200 to 350 euros a month, all in, for one modest car: insurance, IUC road tax, fuel, servicing and the annual IPO inspection. That is before any purchase or finance cost.

Two pieces of good news. Since January 2025 the A22 has been toll-free under Law 37/2024, which is a real ongoing saving for anyone driving the coast regularly. And fuel and servicing are cheaper than in Northern Europe. But a couple running two cars — which is common where one person works and the other does not drive the same routes — is looking at 400 to 700 a month before anything else.

Utilities and connectivity

ItemMonthly, 2026
Electricity60–120 euros
Water25–45
Internet30–45
Monthly bus pass, Vamus Algarve urbanroughly 25–40, town-dependent
Gym30–50
Golf membership, where it applies1,000–3,000+ per year, resort-dependent

The electricity range is wide for a reason: air conditioning in summer and electric heaters in winter both bite. Algarve houses are built for heat rather than cold, few have central heating, and a January evening in an uninsulated villa at 12 C with a single electric heater is a common experience. December is also the wettest month at 110 mm. Budget for both ends of the year, not the pleasant middle.

Eating, and the season premium

  • Coffee: 0.80 to 1.20 euros — up to 2.50 and beyond on a tourist esplanade in August.
  • Menu do dia lunch: 9 to 13 euros off-season, and frequently unavailable in resort areas in August, when kitchens switch to the a la carte tourist menu.
  • Dinner for two, mid-range: 35 to 70 euros, with a real summer premium in tourist zones.

That seasonal swing is the thing to plan around. The same meal in the same restaurant costs meaningfully more in August, and the cheap set lunch that makes Portuguese life affordable often disappears entirely for the peak months. Residents shift to cooking at home in summer and eating out in winter — the reverse of the visitor pattern.

Realistic totals

HouseholdMonthly, with a car
Single person1,500–2,200 euros
Couple2,200–3,200 euros

Compare that with Lisbon at 1,600 to 2,600 for a single person and Porto at 1,800 to 2,400 mid-range. The Algarve is not the cheap option it is often assumed to be — rents are lower than Lisbon’s but the car, the utilities swing and the summer premium close most of the gap. Where it genuinely is cheaper is inland, and inland is a different life.

Frequently asked questions

How much do you need to live in the Algarve?

1,500 to 2,200 euros a month for a single person and 2,200 to 3,200 for a couple, both including a car at 200 to 350 a month. A one-bedroom runs 650 to 900 in Olhao or Tavira and 1,000 to 1,400 on the Lagos and Almancil coast. Utilities swing between 60 and 120 for electricity depending on whether you are running air conditioning or heaters.

Is the Algarve cheaper than Lisbon?

Less than people assume. Rents are lower — a coastal one-bedroom at 800 to 1,100 against Lisbon’s 1,300 to 1,700 — but the car costs 200 to 350 a month where Lisbon needs a 40 euro transport pass, utilities swing higher at both ends of the year, and tourist-zone prices carry a real summer premium. The totals end up close. Inland Algarve is genuinely cheaper; the coast is not.

Are Algarve restaurants expensive?

Off-season, no — a menu do dia lunch runs 9 to 13 euros and dinner for two 35 to 70. In August, in tourist zones, prices rise across the board and the cheap set lunch often disappears entirely as kitchens switch to a la carte. Residents adapt by cooking at home in summer and eating out in winter, which is the opposite of the visitor pattern.
